TAP Portugal


TAP Portugal is the national air carrier of Portugal. It is a member of Star Alliance, which is the largest aviation alliance in the world. It carries out transportation to Africa, North and South America, Brazil, as well as in the south-west of Europe. Its main hubs are Portela (Lisbon), Porto and Madeira airports.

History of TAP Portugal

Tap Portugal has been taking passengers since 1946. The first flight landed in Madrid from Lisbon. After 18 years, the company carried its one millionth passenger.

In 1975, the airline opened international flights, the first being a flight to Boston. In the 80s it added flights to Germany, in the 90s — to Israel. The first airplane to Russia Tap Portugal launched in 2009, to Moscow, Domodedovo airport.

After February 2022, Tap Portugal withdrew from Russia, but in 2023 it reconsidered its decision and plans to return flights to the country in the near future.

TAP Portugal aircraft fleet

The airline’s fleet consists of 77 airplanes with a service life of about 10 years. Several years ago, the company abandoned German Boeings in favor of French and Brazilian Airbuses.

Flight directions

Tap Portugal flies in Europe, takes passengers to major cities in the U.S. (Boston, New York) and the Middle East (Tel Aviv, Israel).

Lisbon — Boston

The company’s first flight across the ocean. Tap Portugal airplanes fly to Boston 5 times a day. In winter, the number of flights is halved. The price during this time drops by about 50%. The cheapest tickets to the USA can be taken on Wednesday, and the peak of ticket prices is on Saturday.

Lisbon — Rio de Janeiro

Tap Portugal flights to Rio de Janeiro leave almost always 100% full at any time of the year. Therefore, prices do not change throughout the year for the destination, but on Mondays and Tuesdays the ticket price drops by about 10% compared to other days.

Lisbon — Paris

The airline’s most popular flight. Tap Portugal sends about 10 airplanes a day to Paris at night, morning, afternoon and evening. In summer, tickets to France are almost twice as expensive. The price also increases on Friday.

Moscow and St. Petersburg

After a one-year hiatus, the airline plans to resume flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg to Portugal and Brazil from 2022.

TAP Portugal offers a choice of 6 fares at different prices. Ticket price varies depending on the availability of luggage, type of seats, class of service and flight distance.

TAP Portugal Loyalty Programs

Goes by the name Victoria. Members accumulate exclusive miles for upgrades when purchasing a ticket on any airline flight.

Tap Portugal is a member of the international airline alliance Star Alliance, so residents of the loyalty program can earn award miles when using services of other carriers that are members of this alliance.

Victoria is divided into 2 levels: Silver and Gold:

  • To upgrade to Silver level, a passenger must fly 25 flights. To maintain the level, he or she must use the airline’s services at least 15 times a year.
  • To get to the Gold level, a passenger must fly 50 flights and make 20 more flights through Star Alliance members each year.

Baggage rules and regulations

The company’s baggage rules are subject to the basic norms of air transportation:

  • Sharp objects may only be placed in your luggage;
  • It is forbidden to carry explosive and poisonous substances;
  • Liquid of any volume is transported in luggage, in hand luggage the volume of liquid is up to 100 ml.
Each baggage item does not exceed 158 cm3 in dimensions and its weight depends on the fare of the ticket.

Instructions on how to check-in for an airplane

You can check-in online on the airline’s website or at the airport.

When checking in online, the passenger enters his/her data and receives a boarding pass in the app or by email. He can print it out or save it to his mobile device.

Check-in at the airport can be done in the standard way — through the terminal window or a company self-service kiosk, where the customer will receive the printed boarding pass himself/herself.
